Mike Best (1945 to 2023)
On behalf of Chairman Andy Kinsella, and the rest of the committee at Cottingham Cricket Club, I have the sad duty to report that our Club President Mike Best sadly passed away on 17 April, after a short illness.
Mike was 77 years old and was a member of CCC for some 60 years. After only a couple of years playing cricket, Mike was elected as Cricket Secretary in 1965, and served in that position for 55 years, standing down at the end of 2019. He was then elected as Club President a year later in 2020, a position which he held until his passing.
On the playing front, Mike also captained the clubs only team for 3 seasons, 1965-67. Then when the club expanded to include a 2nd XI, he took on the Captains role in 1977 for 4 years. The club continued to expand and a 3rd XI was introduced in 1989 and Mike took on another Captains role, enjoying bringing on the younger members and introducing them to senior cricket. He was also one of the founders of our Junior cricket section starting with U17’s around the same time.
Mike was also a precious asset to the club for fundraising activities. He ran a Christmas raffle for over 30 years, and various other events over the years, raising thousands of pounds for club funds.
From the clubs early days, with one league side, and a few Sunday friendlies, Mike has seen the club evolve into the beast it is today, with 6 senior sides and all age groups in Junior cricket. A great deal of the success is down to the effort and commitment of Mike Best, and hopefully his legacy will now live on for many years to come.
Mike will be sadly missed by all at CCC, but his memory will live on forever. RIP Mike!
Mike Gibson
Vice Chairman
Cottingham CC
