Crossgates Cricket Club has proudly served the community for over 125 years, promoting a
love of cricket rooted in its motto, “Animus Probitas” — courage and honesty. These values
underpin everything we do at Crossgates United Friends Cricket Club (CUFCC).
Today, CUFCC is a diverse, inclusive, and forward-looking club. Our membership reflects the
rich cultural fabric of our community, with players of English, Irish, Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan
and other mixed heritages. We are proud to represent multiple faiths — Christianity, Sikhism,
Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism — united by one shared passion: CRICKET! Our club stands as
a space where community cohesion is built through sport.
The Growth of Women & Girls Cricket at CUFCC
Our Women & Girls section is just three years old, born from a simple but powerful idea. A
group of women, initially spectators supporting husbands and sons, decided they wanted to step
onto the field themselves. What started with a plastic bat has grown into a competitive, thriving
section of the club.
Today, our female players range from 8 to 45 years old, including mother–daughter pairs.
Among them are women transitioning from “couch to cricket” with no prior sporting background, working professionals and homemakers. Some players travel over 20 miles each week out of commitment to the team. Many women manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and autoimmune disorders, all of which are forgotten when they step on the playing field.
Cricket has become more than a sport for us — it is community, wellbeing, and
empowerment.
We now compete in the West Yorkshire Women & Girls Cricket League, playing in the Leeds
East 1st Division (2024 Outdoor League) and Leeds East 2nd Division (2025 Indoor League),
proudly finishing in the Top 3 indoors. In just three years, we have progressed from borrowed
plastic equipment to winning trophies for our club.
Our Commitment
We are deeply aligned with the national vision for growing women’s cricket, as championed by
the England and Wales Cricket Board, and we are proud to be playing our part at grassroots
level.
We are a passionate, community-driven club committed to increasing access and participation
for women and girls. We prioritise safety, confidence, and long-term player development.
