Behind every successful cricket club are volunteers who quietly ensure everything runs smoothly. At Carlton Towers Cricket Club, one of those figures for many years has been Steve Carr, who recently stepped down after a long spell as Club Secretary, bringing to a close a significant chapter of service to the club and to local cricket.

Steve has long been regarded as a stalwart of Carlton Towers, dedicating countless hours behind the scenes to help keep the club running effectively. The role of secretary is often one of the most demanding volunteer positions within a cricket club, requiring organisation, communication and a willingness to deal with the many administrative tasks that allow cricket to take place each week. From league correspondence and player registrations to helping coordinate fixtures and ensuring club matters run smoothly, Steve played a central part in maintaining the structure and stability of Carlton Towers.

During Steve’s time in the role, Carlton Towers continued to develop both on and off the field. One of the most significant projects in recent years was the development of a new clubhouse, designed not only to support cricket but also to act as a hub for the local community. Initiatives such as this require significant planning, coordination and commitment from volunteers, and the role of club secretary is often at the heart of bringing these developments together.

Steve’s contribution to cricket has also extended beyond Carlton Towers itself. He has played an important role within Yorkshire Premier League North, serving as Chairman of the league’s Disciplinary Committee. Positions like this carry considerable responsibility, helping maintain standards of behaviour and ensuring the game is played in the right spirit across the league.
While much of a secretary’s work happens away from the spotlight, the impact of that dedication is felt across the entire club. The organisation, commitment and reliability required to keep a cricket club running week after week depend heavily on volunteers willing to give their time for the good of the game.

After many years of service, Steve’s decision to step down marks the end of an important chapter for Carlton Towers Cricket Club. His contribution has helped provide stability and direction for the club, and his efforts stand as a reminder of the people who keep grassroots cricket alive.
Carlton Towers has been fortunate to have someone with Steve’s dedication working behind the scenes for so long. Volunteers like Steve are the lifeblood of the game — the true People Behind Cricket.
