At many cricket clubs, success on the field is supported by an enormous amount of unseen work behind the scenes. At York Cricket Club, few people embody that commitment more than Nick Kay.
Nick is best known at the club as its long-serving Honorary Secretary, but that title barely scratches the surface of the work he does. Over the years he has taken on multiple roles including treasurer, fixture secretary, membership contact, and website administrator, making him one of the central figures in the day-to-day running of the club.
His involvement has stretched well beyond administration. Nick has also been an active player at York since 1995, captaining the First XI to the old Yorkshire League title in 2015 and being part of the National Club Championship winning side in 2012. Latterly, Nick captained the club’s Second XI, helping develop younger players and contributing to the club’s strong cricketing culture.
One of his most significant contributions has been helping position York as one of the leading outgrounds in the region. Through careful planning and organisation, the club has hosted a number of high-profile matches involving Yorkshire County Cricket Club (Official) , bringing first-class cricket to Clifton Park.
When York staged a County Championship match between Yorkshire and Warwickshire in 2019, Nick played a central role in coordinating the event. Organising a professional match at a club ground requires months of preparation – from ground improvements and logistics to security, hospitality, and volunteer coordination – and Nick was instrumental in ensuring everything ran smoothly.
His work in developing the club and helping raise the profile of cricket in York has not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his efforts, he received the Lawrence Walker Award for Club Development at the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation OSCAs in 2019.
But like many volunteers in club cricket, Nick’s contribution is measured less by awards and more by the countless hours of work that keep a club functioning week after week. From arranging fixtures and managing memberships to ensuring the club continues to move forward, his dedication has been vital to York Cricket Club’s continued growth and success.
In every league there are people who quietly hold things together behind the scenes. At York Cricket Club, Nick Kay is undoubtedly one of them.
