At many successful grassroots cricket clubs there is usually one person quietly working behind the scenes to keep everything moving. At Goole Town Cricket Club, that figure is Neil Foster, the club’s chairman, coach, and long-serving player whose contribution spans playing, coaching and administration.
Neil has become one of the central figures in the modern development of Goole Town CC, developing the club into a modern cricket venue with an excellent social scene. As Chairman, he plays a key role in guiding the direction of the club, helping to ensure that it continues to grow and provide opportunities for cricketers of all ages. His leadership extends well beyond committee meetings; Neil is a hands-on volunteer who is regularly involved in the day-to-day running of the club.
A passionate supporter of junior cricket (following in his dad – Steve’s – footsteps), Neil has devoted considerable time to developing young players at Goole. As an ECB Level 3 qualified coach (contributing to Yorkshire pathways for 20 years), he has worked closely with the club’s youth teams, helping to coach and manage sides across several age groups and at senior level. His commitment to nurturing young talent has helped strengthen the club’s junior pathway and ensured that future generations of cricketers continue to come through the ranks. Recently, Neil has been instrumental to the hugely successful All Stars scheme (which has begun taking bookings for this years course!), seeing over 250 of the youngest cricketers begin their life in cricket.
Alongside his administrative and coaching roles, Neil has is still an active player and has scored over 11000 runs, and taken over 250 catches for the first team, a journey which began in 1990, captaining them in in 3 spells spanning 10 years, and still contributes across various sides including the 1st XI, 2nd XI and academy teams. His long association with the game also includes spells at Doncaster Town CC and Hensall Cricket Club CC (juniors!), giving him a broad understanding of club cricket across the region. Neils children all play at various levels at the Club, his two sons, Freddie and Ashton beginning senior cricket themselves and his daughter Ella proudly representing Yorkshire Girls.
Those who know Goole Town CC recognise that much of its strength comes from dedicated volunteers who invest their time and energy for the benefit of others. Neil is very much one of those individuals. Whether chairing the club, coaching the next generation, or supporting teammates on the field, his commitment reflects the very best traditions of grassroots cricket.
Through his leadership and dedication, Neil continues to play a vital role in ensuring that Goole Town Cricket Club remains a welcoming and thriving hub for cricket in the community.
