Few families have made a greater contribution to a single cricket club than Mike and Steve Burdett. For almost half a century, the brothers have been at the very heart of Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club, dedicating countless hours as players, captains, coaches, administrators and ambassadors for the game.
Mike's association with the club began as a fourteen-year-old, when Woodhouse Grange legend Fred Mason introduced his paper boy to the club. It was the start of an extraordinary journey. A superb wicketkeeper blessed with exceptional speed, agility and safe hands, Mike became one of the finest glovemen of his generation. Equally accomplished with the bat, his intelligent middle-order batting and lightning-quick running between the wickets made him an integral part of the First XI for more than thirty years, including a spell as captain. Even today, he continues to represent the club with distinction.
His contribution has never been confined to the playing field. Mike has coached and managed the club's junior teams, served as a valued member of the Executive Committee, overseen the construction of the club's second pavilion and helped shape plans for the future development of the club's facilities. He has also represented the League, played at Lord's in National Village Cup Finals, and continues his involvement with the Marylebone Cricket Club as both a playing member and match manager.
Steve followed his brother to Woodhouse Grange and has devoted his cricketing life to the club ever since. An outstanding all-round cricketer, he combined accomplished middle-order batting with the rare ability to swing the ball both ways. As captain, he led Woodhouse Grange to a remarkable four consecutive York Senior League championships and guided the club to several National Village Cup Finals at Lord's. Like Mike, he has proudly represented the League and is both a playing member and match manager with the M.C.C.
Steve was selected and played for England over 50's in 2026.
Away from the field, Steve has made an equally significant impact. He has coached generations of young cricketers, served as Junior Cricket Chairman, captained the Second XI to league success while developing emerging talent, and today continues to shape the future of the club as Director of Cricket. Beyond Woodhouse Grange, his influence extends across the region through his role as Vice Chairman of the Yorkshire Premier League North Executive Committee, where he continues to help guide and develop league cricket.
Together, Mike and Steve Burdett exemplify everything that the Yorkshire Premier League North Lifetime Achievement Award seeks to recognise. Their loyalty, leadership, sportsmanship and unwavering commitment have helped build one of Yorkshire's leading cricket clubs while inspiring generations of players, volunteers and supporters.
For nearly fifty years of outstanding service to Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club, distinguished achievements on the field, and an enduring commitment to the development of cricket throughout the region, Yorkshire Premier League North is proud to induct Mike and Steve Burdett into the YPLN Hall of Fame.
