It is with deep sadness that news has been received of the passing of former Scarborough Cricket Club player Chris Stephenson, who has died at the age of 87 following a recent illness.
Stephenson enjoyed a distinguished career with the club, amassing 7,494 runs across 221 innings at an impressive average of 39.86, with a highest score of 138 not out. His most remarkable season came in 1981, when he surpassed Alan Richardson’s long-standing 42-year record by accumulating 1,462 runs. That same year, he also excelled in the John Haig Trophy National Knockout Competition, scoring 553 runs at an extraordinary average of 110.6.
His contributions were instrumental in a period of significant success for Scarborough, during which he helped the club secure three John Haig Trophy titles, four Yorkshire League championships, and two Yorkshire League Knockout Cup victories.
Chris Stephenson’s legacy at Scarborough Cricket Club is one of excellence, consistency, and dedication. He leaves behind many cherished memories for teammates, supporters, and all who knew him. Thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
