Alan Longmate – Hull Zingari CC
Hull Zingari Cricket Club have announced the sad passing of Alan Longmate, who died on 7 April 2026, just a day after his beloved Lincoln City FC celebrated promotion from League One to the Championship.

Alan’s association with Hull Zingari began in 1962, following earlier cricket with Lincoln Lindum CC in the Lincolnshire League and representative appearances in Minor Counties cricket for Lincolnshire. A highly accomplished batsman, he became a cornerstone of the club’s success during the 1960s and 1970s, forming a formidable opening partnership alongside Ed Nicholls.

He captained the 1st XI between 1965 and 1969, and again in 1974 and 1975, leading the club through a particularly successful period. Under his leadership, Hull Zingari were runners-up in the East Yorkshire Cup for four consecutive seasons from 1965 to 1968, before securing a historic victory in 1969 — the club’s first triumph in the competition since joining in 1934.

Alan’s commitment to the club extended far beyond his playing days. He later captained the 2nd XI in 1980 and 1981, before serving as Club Secretary from 1993 to 2004. In this role, he earned widespread respect for his fairness and inclusivity, treating all members equally regardless of team or status. His steady leadership helped guide the club through its Centenary Year in 1996 and its transition into the York & District League in 2001.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Alan was made an Honorary Life Member in 2004.
Remembered as a true gentleman and a dedicated clubman, Alan Longmate embodied the very best values of cricket throughout his life.
