PETER SQUIRES
Peter first played cricket for Ripon in 1969 when he averaged 41 in just 9 innings. Following a spell in the Bradford League and with Harrogate Cricket Club he returned to Ripon in 1984 when he hit 959 runs at an average of 53.38. He made 10 league centuries with a best of 149no v Bedale in 1988.
Peter was a popular man around the grounds of the old York & District Senior Cricket League, playing for Ripon for many years and making many appearances for Yorkshire County Cricket Club (Official) both first class and limited overs.
In 2010 Peter was inducted into the Y&DSCL Hall of Fame.
He was born in Ripon and educated at both Ripon Grammar School and York St John University.
For Yorkshire he scored 1,271 runs at an average of 16.72, with a best score of 70. In limited overs cricket he played fifty six times from 1971 to 1976, making 708 runs at 16.46 with a top score of 79 not out.
Arguably he was better known for his rugby union exploits, playing on the wing for both Ripon RUFC and Harrogate RUFC and twenty nine times for England in the 1970s, scoring six tries, as well as becoming a British Lion on the 1977 British Lions tour to New Zealand.
