There are those who play the game, and there are those whose dedication ensures the game continues to thrive for future generations. Alan Smith belongs firmly in the latter category. 

 

Following the closure of Humberside Police Cricket Club, Alan founded Swanland Cricket Club in 2015, creating a remarkable phoenix from the ashes. Through vision, determination and an unwavering belief in community cricket, he transformed a new club into one that is now respected throughout the Yorkshire Premier League North. 

 

Alan has fulfilled almost every role imaginable. Chairman, groundsman, club umpire, fundraiser, organiser and mentor, he has been the driving force behind Swanland CC since its formation. He secured the club's home, recruited players and volunteers, obtained grants, raised vital funds and continually invested in improving facilities and equipment. His tireless work has also produced a playing surface of which any club would be proud. 

 

Perhaps Alan's greatest achievement, however, has been creating a welcoming and inclusive club. His enthusiasm, kindness and leadership have attracted people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, helping Swanland become one of the league's most diverse and respected clubs. The club's achievements on the field owe much to the environment and spirit he has fostered away from it. 

 

What makes Alan's contribution even more inspiring is that it has been delivered while facing significant personal health challenges. Despite these, his commitment to Swanland Cricket Club and to the game he loves has never diminished. His resilience, humility and selfless service have earned the admiration of everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside him.
